Best for / Not for

BEST FOR

  • Products that want a Postgres-based backend without operating the database
  • Small teams that need authentication and storage beside the database
  • Applications that benefit from SQL and row-level security

NOT FOR

  • Teams that require full infrastructure control
  • Workloads that are not a good fit for Postgres
  • Projects that cannot accept platform-specific backend APIs

Where it fits in your stack

Connects the frontend to Postgres, authentication, file storage, realtime updates, and server functions. It can replace separate database, identity, storage, and basic CRUD API services.

Pricing

Pricing model: Subscription plus usage. Pro is $25/month with the first project included; additional projects start at $10/month. Paid plans include $10/month in compute credits, enough to cover one Micro instance.

Free allowance: $0 — 50,000 MAU, 500 MB database, 5 GB egress, 5 GB cached egress, 1 GB file storage, and 2 active projects. Free projects are paused after 1 week of inactivity.

Overage rule: MAU $0.00325 · disk $0.125/GB · egress $0.09/GB · cached egress $0.03/GB · file storage $0.0213/GB. Spend Cap is ON by default on Pro — overages are not billed unless it is turned off.

Trade-offs

  • Database design and row-level security still require backend expertise
  • Several backend concerns become coupled to one provider
  • Usage beyond included quotas can create multiple billing dimensions
